Valery played keyboards in many jazz clubs and piano bars around Moscow. At the beginning of his career he was deeply influenced by Philadelphians Bud Powell, Red Garland and Bobby Timmons. Later he played with many bands, including dixieland, swing, and fusion. However, hard bop remains his favorite style. Among others, he played with Valery Ponomarev before Ponomarev joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
